What is Disc Golf?

New to disc golf? Our mate Josh from the DGW Street Team put together this guide to get you started.

If you've heard of disc golf but never tried it, here's everything you need to know.

What is Disc Golf?

Disc golf is exactly what it sounds like. Golf, but with flying discs instead of balls and clubs. You throw from a tee pad and try to land your disc in a metal basket in as few throws as possible. That's it.

Most courses are 9 or 18 holes, and a round usually takes under an hour. Courses are set up in public parks all over Australia and New Zealand, and the best part? They're completely free to play. No green fees, no memberships, no bookings. Just you, some discs, and the great outdoors.

Why People Love It

It's free and accessible. There are over 250 courses across Australia and New Zealand, and most of them are free. All you need is a few discs and you're ready to go.

It gets you outdoors. Courses take you through parks, bushland, and scenic spots you'd never normally explore. Fresh air, sunshine, and a walk through nature. It's exercise that doesn't feel like exercise.

Anyone can play. Kids, families, retirees, athletes, complete beginners. Everyone plays at their own pace. It's as competitive or as casual as you want it to be.

Easy to learn, hard to master. You can learn the basics in one round, but there's always room to improve. Watching your disc fly exactly where you aimed it? Incredibly satisfying.

The community is awesome. Whether you bring mates or meet people on the course, disc golf has one of the friendliest communities around. Just good people having a laugh and enjoying the game.

How to Get Started

Getting started is simple. Grab a starter set with the discs you need, find a course near you, and head out. That's it.

A starter set typically includes a driver, a midrange, and a putter. These are the three disc types you'll use on the course. They're designed to be easy to throw for beginners, so you can focus on learning the game rather than fighting your discs.
